The unit is designed to be a welcoming, bright, non–institutional environment with a strong emphasis on legibility for users and visitors alike. It is a mixed sex facility with all patient accommodation in single en–suite bedrooms with great care taken regarding anti–ligature design and patient safety and security. The site perimeter enjoys a rural setting and the wards benefit from a close relationship with the landscape; a key feature of the design is the use of accessible protected landscaped courtyards. Delivered in conjunction with David Morley Architects, it achieved a NEAT excellent environmental rating. Awards include the Best Mental Health Design at the national Building Better Healthcare Awards 2008, Highly Commended in the prestigious Design & Health International Awards: Mental Health category 2009, and a Civic Trust Award in 2009.
